FEAST OF THE ASCENSION

The feast day of the Ascension is May 17th. When we recite the Apostles’ Creed we say these words: “On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.” What do we mean when we say that Jesus “ascended into heaven”? As Catholics, we believe that after Jesus appeared on earth in his risen body, he gave instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. Jesus “was lifted up and a cloud took him from their sight” Jesus’ ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus’ humanity into God’s heavenly domain. The feast of the Ascension is a holy day of obligation.
